4. Photo mock-ups
Once we agreed which photograph to use for your portrait I will create a mock-up or montage of your photo in a computer program. How this mock-up will look all depends on your wishes. Many times I only have to delete the background and add colouring that suits the animal or person. Sometimes I also have to do a full photo montage to include elements that will be used for the portrait. Sometimes several mock-ups have to be made before my clients like it.
The initial email from my client
"Hi Katja,
I am interested in having a portrait painted.
There are three dogs, a German short haired pointer, a chocolate Labrador and a brown and tan Doberman.
These are all dogs we have had over the years and wondered if the three could be painted as one picture but just their heads.
Unfortunately the photographs I have of the dogs are not digital and are of the individual dogs I do not have a photograph of them all together.
I was looking for an oil painting but looking for your advice as to whether the background be plain or scenic, and the approximate cost involved as I am unsure what size of canvas would be required.
Also can you advise of the time frame for this, from order to delivery as it is for a gift.
Thank you for your help, I am impressed with what I have seen on your website
Regards Allison Hernandez (Scotland)"
Unfortunately the first photos Allison sent were in too poor quality for any kind of pet portraits. She took new photographs of only Teddy, the chocolate Labrador and they were excellent. We decided to create a portrait of him only, in size 38 x 46cm. Allison already decided to go for oils, but if someone is unsure about what medium to choose I always want to see the photographs before I give my opinion in that matter. In this case I created a simple photo mock-up for her with suitable colors in the background. In other cases I can place the animal or person in different background scenes and I can remove some unwanted features if required. |

This photo wasn’t quite what we were looking for and the entire dog wasn’t visible in the photo. She sent several photos, but at the end we chose the best of course. |
Perfect photo to show his happy and energetic personality, but the photo was taken a little bit from the wrong level. The photo was sharp enough and the best one in the bunch so it had to be this photo. |
The photo mock-up with suitable colors for the background. Everything needs to be perfect before I’m even thinking of starting with the painting. |

In this case Allison decided to go with the first photo mock-up I did, but in other cases the photo mock-ups are needed to be redone several times to create the perfect portrait, especially when the portrait will have backgrounds scenes which are added to the original photo. Next step is the work in progress. |
