Gustaf IV A. / King Portraits in Oils by Katja Turnsek
Portrait Painting Commission Info
I created this oil portrait on Italian Linen canvas, professionally stretched. The painting of former Swedish King Gustaf IV A. was commissioned as a gift for a special society here in Gothenburg by Peter. He decided to have the oil portrait framed by my local framer and wholesaler.
Naturally we wanted something traditional, or old fashioned, so we chose a wonderful gold moulding, perfectly suitable for this kind of oil portraits. Peter come to collect the painting in my Studio, so unfortunately I don't have a written testimonial from him.
Medium: Oil on Linen Canvas
Size: 60 x 45 cm
Year Painted: 2012
Subject: King Gustaf IV A.
Commissioned by: Peter Larsson, Sweden
The Reference Photograph
Peter gave me a really old framed photograph of the subject. The paper was already yellow, so I scanned and edited the colours as much as I could to make them look fresh and new. I rather do as much as I can with the photos before I start to paint, this way I don't have to think about hundred different things while I paint. No special mock-up was needed for this oil portrait.
Portrait in Progress
Below you can view a few work in progress photos of this portrait. It is important for me that you understand the painting process at the same as you have a full input the entire time, that is why I’m prepared to spend some extra time in order to keep you regularly updated. I have had this feature for many years, even though I uploaded the progress images to a static html page at first. Now I use my portraits in blog for this exciting feature. If you do not wish to share your painting’s progress or the completed painting with the world, I can send you the progress images by email. Several clients decided to do this, especially famous ones.
