German Shepherd Pet Portraits in Pencil by Katja Turnsek

Pet Portrait Commission Info

This is one of my past dog portraits in pencil. It's very small and that's probably visible, but still a wonderful portrait of the German Shepherd Gryph. I drew this portrait on Fabrian 5 paper which has more texture than Artistico. Janice commissioned Gryph's portrait as a late Christmas gift for her friend.

All my portraits in graphite pencils are sent with a white mount/matt which I believe is a nice way to deliver a portrait, even though it isn't framed. Gryph was very young when the reference photo was taken therefor one of the ears didn't stand up straight. But this gives the overall portrait a priceless charm.

The Reference Photograph of "Gryph"

The reference photo of Gryph was a bit blurry and dark, but I managed to create a nice photo mock-up of what I had to work with. I deleted the entire background, made allot of lift adjustments and sharpened it all up a bit. I also added a different background to create a nice entirety.

Pet Portrait in Progress

Below you can view a few work in progress photos of this portrait. It is important for me that you understand the painting process at the same as you have a full input the entire time, that is why I’m prepared to spend some extra time in order to keep you regularly updated. I have had this feature for many years, even though I uploaded the progress images to a static html page at first. Now I use my portraits in blog for this exciting feature. If you do not wish to share your painting’s progress or the completed painting with the world, I can send you the progress images by email. Several clients decided to do this, especially famous ones.
