German Shepherd Mix Dog Portraits in Pencil by Katja Turnsek
Dog Portrait Commission Info
Jacqueline contacted me to create a drawing of her and her husbands deceased dog. His name was Kodi and he was mixed breed between German Shepherd and black Shiloh. Jacqueline also decided to have the pencil drawing framed by my local framer.
She gave the portrait to her husband as a Christmas gift. This drawing was created on my favorite paper: Fabriano Artistico. It was unite a challenge to draw Kodi because of his fur, but it’s always very realizing to create pencil portraits.
Medium: Graphite Pencil
Size: 30 x 25 cm
Year Drawn: 2013
Subject: Dog / GSD mix / Kodi
Commissioned by: Jacqueline Gabel, USA
The Reference Photograph of "Kodi"
I deleted the whole background on this mock-up. I also lightened and softened up the edges below his nose to give some dimension. Since this photo was a bit cropped to the right, I added some fur there by copying his left fur and then softened it all up. This way I could draw Kodi’s portrait in the middle of the paper.
Dog Portrait in Progress
Below you can view a few work in progress photos of this portrait. It is important for me that you understand the painting process at the same as you have a full input the entire time, that is why I’m prepared to spend some extra time in order to keep you regularly updated. I have had this feature for many years, even though I uploaded the progress images to a static html page at first. Now I use my portraits in blog for this exciting feature. If you do not wish to share your painting’s progress or the completed painting with the world, I can send you the progress images by email. Several clients decided to do this, especially famous ones.
Oh my gosh!! That is amazing. You are amazing! You have really captured our Kodi.
