Clumber Spaniel Dog Portraits in Oils by Katja Turnsek
Dog Portrait Commission Info
The oil portrait of Clumber spaniel Duncan was commissioned by Kelly to give as a present. Duncan is sadly no longer with us, but this lovely portrait will serve as a wonderful way to celebrate his life. kelly initially wanted a painterly styled portrait, but since I decided to stop painting those, she agreed to commission a detailed oil portrait instead.
I loved to paint Duncan and even though this painting is rather small, it has some really tiny details included. I wanted to achieve softness and warmth in this portrait.
Medium: Oil on Linen Canvas
Size: 30 x 30 cm
Year Painted: 2013
Subject: Dog / Clumber Spaniel / Duncan

The Reference Photograph of "Duncan"
I received some really lovely photos of Duncan and ended up in choosing this one. I cropped the image to fit the canvas size and edited some lights. I also added some more neck, by copying that part from another climber spaniel.
After that was done, I softened up the edges and changed the color balance. Later on I decided not to paint the flowers as I thought it would distract Duncan’s portrait.
Dog Portrait in Progress
Below you can view a few work in progress photos of this portrait. It is important for me that you understand the painting process at the same as you have a full input the entire time, that is why I’m prepared to spend some extra time in order to keep you regularly updated. I have had this feature for many years, even though I uploaded the progress images to a static html page at first. Now I use my portraits in blog for this exciting feature. If you do not wish to share your painting’s progress or the completed painting with the world, I can send you the progress images by email. Several clients decided to do this, especially famous ones.
I just wanted to let you know that my mom received the portrait of Duncan and she loves it! I haven't seen it yet, but I know she's really happy with it. Thank you again for all of your great work - the portrait will be very special to our family, Duncan was a much-loved member of our family. I can't wait to see it.
