Cat Portrait Commission Info

Justin contacted me to create a oil painting of their beautiful cat Gala. Unfortunately she had throat and tongue cancer and they recently lost her, but at least they got many wonderful years with her. Gala’s portrait served as a wonderful Christmas gift for Justin’s partner Narelle who has had Gala ever since she was a kitten.

Both Justin and Narelle are very fussy about getting things like portraits or tattoos done, as they always worry if they are going to be happy with the result. Well, at the end they at least loved Gala’s portrait which makes me happy too.

The Reference Photograph of "Gala"

Justin sent several really great photos of Gala and we ended up in choosing this beautiful photo. Initially I wanted to create lighter and warmer colors in the background, but Justin wanted me to paint the photo as it is. Even so, I decided to use a warmer color-palette and it turned out great.

Cat Portrait in Progress

Below you can view a few work in progress photos of this portrait. It is important for me that you understand the painting process at the same as you have a full input the entire time, that is why I’m prepared to spend some extra time in order to keep you regularly updated. I have had this feature for many years, even though I uploaded the progress images to a static html page at first. Now I use my portraits in blog for this exciting feature. If you do not wish to share your painting’s progress or the completed painting with the world, I can send you the progress images by email. Several clients decided to do this, especially famous ones.

Cat Portrait in Oil

Hi Katja..and Merry Christmas all the way from Australia!

I just wanted to let you know that my girlfriend/partner, Narelle, absolutely loved the portrait of Gala. She actually cried when she opened it up. Your talent in capturing Gala makes you feel Gala's eyes are going to follow you and lets you see into her soul.

She's so impressed I think she wants to write to you to say thanks. Narelle herself is a bit of an artist and is in awe of what you've created. I didn't mention to you that Gala was named after Salvador Dali's wife/muse Gala.

And, Katja, don't worry about paying any amount of the GST I had to pay. You were very kind in offering but don't worry about it. We are both just so happy with your portrait it is all worth it. You are a beautiful, talented woman and I hope you are having a great Christmas. If you ever come to Australia let me know. Would love to meet you.

Merry Christmas.
Justin Grant xo
